On a road trip most charging is often public, so this starts at the site’s public charging assumption. Use your home rate from the state table if you’ll charge at home.
Enter the distance from your map app. Estimates cover fuel or electricity only, not tolls, parking or wear.
Sources and assumptions
- Gas prices: U.S. EIA, Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update โ U.S. Regular Gasoline Retail Prices (all taxes included). Week of 2026-11-02 (released 2026-11-03; retrieved 2026-11-03). EIA publishes weekly prices for nine states; for the others we use the state’s EIA region, shown on each page. Regions follow EIA’s map of states in each region.
- Electricity: U.S. EIA, Electric Power Monthly Table 5.6.A โ Average residential price of electricity by state (2026 values preliminary). August 2026 data (released 2026-10-23; retrieved 2026-11-03). Converted from cents per kWh.
- Example car and driving: 28 MPG gas car, 3.5 mi/kWh EV, 12,000 miles a year. These are the calculator’s editable starting values, not measurements of any specific vehicle.
- Public charging $0.45/kWh: an editable assumption, not sourced data. Used only in the “80% home” column.
- Energy cost only. Leaves out purchase price, incentives, insurance, maintenance, charger install and time-of-use rates.
